Inflamed ear piercing in your child: gentle care step by step

In dit artikel
An infection of your child's ear piercing always feels more severe to parents than to the child themselves. The area is red, sensitive, sometimes slightly swollen - and you know that a small wound in that spot immediately raises questions. Good news: in nine out of ten cases, a mild infection in children can be easily managed at home with proper care. We will go through, step by step, what to do, when it's best to visit the GP, and how to prevent it from recurring.
Step 1: First, calmly observe what you see
The first distinction parents need to be able to make: is it a mild irritation or a true infection? A mild irritation causes slight redness, sometimes a crust in the morning, and the child hardly feels anything. A true infection shows clear swelling, warmth, throbbing pain, and often a thick yellow discharge. If in doubt: take a photo with good lighting - this way you'll see tomorrow if it's better or worse. No fever, no severe pain? Then you can start with home care.
Step 2: Keep the care super simple
For children, less is often more. Rinsing twice a day with saline solution or the piercer's aftercare spray is sufficient. No alcohol, no hydrogen peroxide - these make children's skin drier and more sensitive. Also read our guide on why alcohol on earrings is not recommended. Tip: schedule it at a fixed time of day - after brushing teeth - so you won't forget, and the child knows what's coming.
Step 3: Keep your child calm and involved
Children react to your stress. The calmer you are, the calmer they will be. Let your child watch what you're doing in the mirror and explain what the saline solution 'does' ('it helps the little bump calm down'). If it doesn't work in the evening? Do it after breakfast and in the bath. A child who understands what you're doing will help instead of pulling away.
Step 4: The material of the earring makes a big difference
Many children's earrings on the market still contain nickel, even if it's not always clearly stated on the packaging. Anyone who has once seen a mild nickel reaction in a child knows how easily it can be triggered. So, consciously choose nickel-free options - all Petit Bonbon earrings are 100% nickel-free, lead- and cadmium-free, and handmade in Dendermonde. Light, small models like Ada Snow and Whisper White are popular for children's ears: they don't chafe, don't dangle, and stay neatly flat on the earlobe. A delicate Naia Opal makes a lovely gift once everything has settled down.
Step 5: Prevent your child from pulling on it
One of the most underestimated causes of recurrent infections in children is simply - pulling. A sweater sliding over the ear, a hood touching the earring, a playful finger tugging at it. Practical tips: at this stage, choose flat studs without long hooks, no long dangle earrings, and consciously teach the child the habit of 'don't touch the earring'. Short hair or tied-up hair prevents extra friction in the first few weeks after an infection.
When should you go to the GP or pediatrician?
Call without hesitation if you see any of the following: fever above 38°C, rapidly increasing swelling that spreads beyond the earlobe, a bump that becomes warm and painful (possible abscess), or no improvement after 48 hours of consistent care. Also, if the child remains very fussy or refuses to eat: have it assessed. The GP can prescribe a mild anti-inflammatory or antibiotic; if in doubt, they will refer to a dermatologist or pediatrician.
How do you prevent it from coming back?
The greatest prevention lies in material and habituation. Once the inflammation is gone, choose a fixed set of two to three nickel-free favorite earrings that the child can alternate. Wash the pillowcase weekly, keep hair behind the ears during sleep, and rinse the ear regularly for another week or two after recovery. Petit Bonbon earrings are handmade in Dendermonde in small batches - lightweight, beautifully finished, and made for comfortable daily wear.
