Inflamed earlobes: how to prevent and what can you do about it?
How can you prevent an inflamed earlobe?
The most important thing is, of course, to avoid getting an inflammation or allergic reaction to one of your ears. Some women are more sensitive to this than others, but as you can see above, more than 3 in 4 women experience this at some point, so no need to worry about this, after all, this is what it is all about usually only about a mild inflammation. But what can you pay attention to to prevent your earlobe from inflaming?
Sterile hole shooting
It starts with shooting a (new) hole. It is extremely important that whoever shoots the hole uses sterile material. Nowadays people usually use surgical and hypoallergenic material to shoot the hole, but make sure you ask in advance. Now, even with the use of sterile material it can still happen that your earlobe becomes inflamed, after all it remains an open wound. Taking care of the earlobe with the right products is therefore necessary. Be sure to contact your doctor or ask at the pharmacy.
Regularly disinfect your earrings
Regularly disinfecting your ear with alcohol helps to prevent inflammation, but can also serve as a treatment to help the pain, redness or inflammation heal faster. Regularly disinfecting your earrings with alcohol is also recommended.
Choose nickel-free earrings
Cheaper earrings often consist of nickel or a part of nickel. Nickel is known to be the cause of inflamed earlobes. At Petit Bonbon we therefore never use nickel when making our earrings. View all nickel-free earrings here
Sometimes it's also the locks
A less common cause of inflamed earlobes are the clasps on the earrings. Often people only think of the pin and the earring itself, but the lock can also cause irritation and be the cause of the inflammation. Petit Bonbon usually opts for slightly larger plastic locks (you get an extra pair for free with every order) because we know from experience that these provide less ignition, but also because the earrings hang right on the ear.
What can you do about an inflamed earlobe? Or how do you treat an inflamed earlobe?
If you do have an inflamed earlobe, it is best to disinfect it for a few days with disinfecting alcohol. Do not wear earrings for a few days during this treatment, but leave the earlobe free so that it can heal properly. Normally the inflammation will go away after a few days. If this is not the case, or if the inflammation gets worse, be sure to consult your doctor.
How does Petit Bonbon try to prevent inflamed earlobes?
Unfortunately, we cannot completely rule out the possibility that you will not get inflamed earlobes. However, there are some important measures that we are taking. Prevention is better than cure, we think.
Quality material
Everything starts with the choice of the right material and the right suppliers. For example, the way in which the plugs are gold plated is important. At cheaper earrings/suppliers there is only a thin layer of gold or silver on the ear studs. With cheaper earrings you will see that this layer comes off faster and can therefore cause inflammation faster. How quickly the layer comes off often also depends on how you store or store your earrings. Be sure to read our advice regarding storing your earrings.
light earrings
Weight also plays an important role in whether or not you get an infection. The heavier the earrings, the more you feel the earrings hang, and the more you will touch your earrings to, for example, hang them better. Constantly 'playing' with your earring creates friction, which increases the risk of inflammation. So always opt for light earrings.
